There's a Chance I Like Smith

Last weekend Joe and I went down to Smith. Now normally I would have avoided the place, or gone bouldering, but I decided I should give it another try. Lo and behold, I like it. What I like are the moderate multipitch routes. I'm not into super tiny, painful holds on slabby or vertical routes, at least not if they're hard. Smith is not my place to project. It is my place to get off the deck though.

On Saturday we warmed up in the main area, then did Tammy Faye, a 2 pitch 5.9/10c route which was REALLY good. We then went over Asterisk Pass and did Wherever I May Roam, a 5 pitch 5.9ish route. Joe lead the first pitch, I swung lead and did the 2nd, he the third. At the 3rd belay ledge, there was a team trying to rap down, but 2 of the guys had to hang out for a while. I climbed through, and with the rope bag on, lead the crux 9+/10- 4th pitch and strung it together with the final 5.8 pitch. I kinda ran out of draws so I had to skip a few clips. After waiting for about 45 min to rap down, we hit the ground and called it a day.

Sunday we did the first pitch of a 3 pitch route, as it was really sunny and hard route finding on the 2nd pitch. We headed over to the Outward Bound base camp and did some bouldering, then bailed.

I'm excited to get back and try my hand at some more multipitch routes. Next, Zebra/Zion!

It's hard to give 24 Fitness your money

Tonight at 24 Hour Fitness I tried signing up for some training sessions. They have a good deal going on, but I'm really doing it because my yoga instructor Marchond will be my trainer and she has a wealth of knowledge to share. Plus, I'll get stronger for the climbing season. Anyway, Marchond tried signing me up for 6 sessions in their GLOBAL MEMBER SYSTEM (worst name ever) but we kept getting an error "Number or Date not correct. Please format dates like 'DD-MM-YYYY'"

First, there was one date and one number on the registration page. The date: my birthdate, which was pre-populated 09-28-1981 from my member number. If you enter it like the error page said, it would be 28-09-1981, yet that is not the CORRECT format. Nice error message guys. The number: number of sessions, which was 6. Other than that, there was no field that could cause an error. All required fields were filled out correctly, yet this POS system wouldn't register me. Anthony tried, no luck. Josh and Steve tried, no luck. We tried on a different computer (same web-based app though) so of course that didn't work. Needless to say that bug that slipped through their last push wasted a combined 2 hours of everyone's time IN THIS ONE SESSION.

The quote to sum it all up:
Usually if you try a bunch of different stuff it'll eventually let you go on.
-- Steve

All I'm saying is QA your freaking software. Doesn't surprise me though, being some crappy ASP.NET (probably 1.1) app that I bet had little to no testing.

Very cool addition. I like how it also has your notifications down in that new utility bar. Well done!

Top Spanish Climbing Team Interview

though it's in Spanish, it's a very interesting interview. It's crazy to think they train 3-8 hours EVERY DAY. I guess when you're on top you have to train like mad to stay there.

5th Year College Reunion

I'm very glad I went! Though the weather was shitty there and nice here, I managed to have a great time. I flew in Wednesday night and took the new Shrewsbury line on the Metro to my friend Kessell's. Thursday I set a few problems at the old Upper Limits and climbed with my buddy Rob and the Venkers, along with Brandi (the manager) and her beau Alan. That night I had a fantastic dinner with 2 former roommates, Jea Hyun and Grace. Jea's been living in Korea for the last 2 years and I haven't seen Grace in about as long.

Friday I walked around campus quite a bit. It's changed a lot but it's still nice. The kids are hella young! When I met Jea on the South 40 for lunch, we witnessed a HUGE water balloon fight. It was really cold and windy and muddy, but looked like a blast.

That night was the first reunion function, held in the Quad. I got to see quite a few people, Phil Jones, Phil Valko, Pat, Kurt Amundson, Jason Green, Scott and Heidi from my freshman floor, and quite a few others.

Saturday morning we had brunch at Center Court. Gloria wasn't there but 2 profs were: Lo and Bill Smart. I wasn't expecting to see either one so I was really stoked to see them there. Lo hasn't changed. I was expecting he'd be down in Mexico by now. Bill's been doing some crazy research at the Wash U Med School (think robot hands controlled by your brain) and it was rad to talk to him. On the way out we tried to teach the kids about fork apple, but they didn't get it. They were also pre-frosh, so it was basically a wasted opportunity. They all look the same when they're that young.

I made my way down to the new Mildred Lane Kemper art museum on campus. The building was very nice and the exhibits were rad. Saw a few Picassos and a Warhol. The money museum downstairs was very interesting too. Did you know at one point we had 62.5 cent notes floating around? I met Lauren Brown, who's basically living my dream of quitting her job and traveling to SE Asia. Someday...

I hung out in the library again and then made my way back to the South 40 for the Soirée on the Swamp: Remixed which was, because of the cold temps and mud, held in Center Court. I saw Dave Levy and met his fiancée, Alex and Emily.

Later that night we all met up at a bar down by SLU for a private party which was hella fun. Lots of good looking smart people ;-) I saw a few more friends I hadn't seen the previous day and did a little dancing to boot. It was nice to see everyone having a shitload of fun.

Sunday Kessell and I went climbing at the gym where I saw Bill and met his wife and daughter, and even saw Dario (80 yr old climber still pulling down. My idol!) and even Sofie (after she FINALLY recognized me,) then I met up with Tracey and had lunch at her house with her hubby Michael. He's not as bad as I thought. And one of their cats reads and blogs. The visit was too short.

At the airport I saw Joe Kelly and talked with him for a while. Flight back to Denver was uneventful, as was back to Portland. Though I like StL, I'm still happy with my decision to move out here. There's hella good people down there though.

Weather-wise, I'm getting screwed

While I'm super excited to see all my friends in StL, I'd rather have the Portland weather.

Great Performance

I may have gotten to the soccer game 90 minutes early, but I needed to warm up properly anyway. We won, 4-1, and the key scorer on the team: Mr. Shaun Jackson, with 2 goals. If you've ever seen Shaun, he's what you call "Not good," but today he was great. Jesse and Dave also scored. I got railed in the face by a ball close range, but luckily my nose didn't really bleed. I'll miss next game as I'll be in StL for my 5th year class reunion. Fun times to come.

Here's a sweet video I just watched.

Oh the past few weeks

Lemme see... Started another session of soccer. Though we beat that team before, we lost 2-4.

Went climbing down around Bend last week which was really fun. You can check the pics here. We hit Widgi Creek the first day, Smith and the Outward Bound base camp the 2nd, and the OB base camp on the 3rd. It's an easy drive from here through Salem. Weather was great, and the amenities were posh. We stayed in a resort apartment and chilled in the hot tub. Good times.

Started working on a project with merb and datamapper and will be using jquery so that should be fun.

Next week I head to StL for my 5th year reunion. I'm stoked to see some old friends from school as well as the gym. Werd.

Oh yeah, here are some vids.
